COAST REGION

Marinera Norteña
It has its origin in the Negro Dance inspired in the rhythm of hen and cock mating; that is why it is called “Zamba Cueca and later “Zamacueca’’

During its evolution, The Marinera had several names: Mozamala, Pelea de Cajon, Chilena; but, in 1879, due to the hostile situation, in a patriotic moment, against Chile, this dance was not called Chilena any longer but Marinera (in honor of our Heroic Naval Army of Grau Admiral). It is a mixed dance of independent couple, expressing the flirtation, astuteness and intelligence in the courtship ritual of the man to the woman. The music is Spanish for its meter and used instruments as well: the lute and the guitar; It is African for the way how the verses are sung and the use of the handkerchief and the Peruvian Cajon.
Marinera Limeña
It has as a spin off from the Zamacueca whose African or Spanish origin is even discussed.

The local custom writer, Abelardo Gamarra composed along with Jose Alvarado. The Marinera in honor of Grau Admiral and the Huascar ship and in 1893, Rosa Mercedes Ayarza de Morales took the first music of the Marinera to the stave. Since then, the marinera becomes music and party dance.

It is a mixed dance of independent couple expressing flirtation, astuteness and intelligence in the courtship ritual of the man to the woman; while she flirts craftily and very graceful.

The custom is simple and elegant. The man dresses a suit, white shirt, tie, black shoes and a handkerchief. The woman wears a wide skirt dress and heel shoes, without forgetting the handkerchief.

The music is lively and funny. The song consists of the Marinera itself, the Resbalosa (is a picaresque dance of Peruvian origin dating to 1840 with a sweeping long movement by the dancers. ) and the Fuga (it is a final dance of the Marinera with very fast movements.) as heiress to the Zamacueca. At the beginning, the guitar, the Peruvian Cajon and the palms were required by the musical environment of the Marinera. As years passed, wind instruments were introduced forming orchestras and musician bands.
Tondero
It is a dance representative of the north of our country, specifically of Piura department. It is said, The Tondero is a choreography that represents the mating and courtship of the birds.

This “romance’’ is expressed through the choreographies filled of elasticity and beauty.

It is a genuine expression of the festive spirit of the north people.
