Moche Culture

GEOGRAPHICAL SITUATION:
It developed in the north coast of Peru, in the Moche, Chicama, Viru Valleys (Departments of La Libertad, Lambayeque, and part of Ancash).

PERIOD:
Early Midlle


AGE:
From 100 to 800 A.C.

DISCOVERY
It was discovered by Federico Max Uhle in 1902 (according to him, Los Mochicas are directly descended from Los Aztecas and Mayas).

TERRITORIAL EXTENSION:
In the North, the Jequetepeque River (Lambayeque Department) and in the south until the Casma River (Ancash).

MAIN CHARACTERISTICS:
MAIN EXPRESSIONS OF ITS CULTURE
CERAMICS:
They reached a remarkable development because their ceramics are very expressive (scenes of the daily life).

They used Indian red, brown, gray white, cream white colors.
Ceramics were sculptural shape, an example of this are the famous guaco retrato in which human faces are drawn in its different states of mind: joy, sadness, pain, etc.

They used the handle kind support neck.
Guaco base was flat.


AGRICULTURE:
It reached a remarkable development, they built channels, reservoirs, aqueducts which are still used.

METALLURGY:
They knew some alloys, weld. They made great works using beautiful stones and metals (golden, silver, copper).

FISHING:
They built vessels known as caballitos de totora, they used nets, hooks, harpoon.
They caught fishes, shellfish, sea dog.
