Tiahuanaco Culture

GEOGRAPHICAL SITUATION:
It developed in the Meseta del Collao (Collao Plateau) at 21 km. of the Lago Titicaca (Titicaca Lake) in the current countries of Peru and Bolivia.

PERIOD:
Middle Horizon or Second Horizon.


AGE:
From 200 to 1000 A.C.

DISCOVERY
It was discovered by Pedro Cieza de Leon in 1551.

TERRITORIAL EXTENSION:
It was a Pan Peruana culture (all Peru) and in the north, it reached part of Ecuador and in the south, part of Argentina.

ARCHITECTURE:
Their stone works (Lithic Art) had considerable dimensions (ciclópeas).

Copper layers were used to join stone blocks

Its architecture had religious motif. For example, Kalasasaya Palace, Acapana, Portada del Sol (Sun Portal), Templete, Pumapunku.

The Chulpas are also known.

SCULPTURE:
They built monoliths of great size with anthropomorphic representation, for example, Monolito de Benett (Benett Monolith), etc.

CERAMICS:
It was geometric , polychrome (they used red, orange, black colors, etc).
The main representation was made of wood or clay with geometric drawings, It had the shape of a vessel with wide mouth.

METALLURGY:
They knew the alloy of the bronze (cooper with tin).

AGRICULTURE:
The control of ecological stages.
They employed andenes (terraced field technologies).
They plant maize, Yucca, oca (Andean root vegetable), fruits, potatoes (they dehydrate it and got the potato flour and the moraya).
